fragment from the video-installation Ophelia

Ophelia

Ophelia is a video installation that shows a face, a portrait of a woman, floating among vibrating flowers, sinking into the water, projected on six blocks. Each -transparant- block has a different thickness; a natural blurring and increasing blur occurs. The video is the result of the interferences between the different image layers (edited, self-coloured and scratched Super-8 film and digital video) and the material from which the installation is made.

When working with moving images, I often use my experiences of the printing process. How can changes in colour, texture, layer representation - blending modes, placement, etc. affect the image and its meaning? Even the decision about the bottom layer - on which to project - has a crucial influence on the idea.

For Ophelia, I worked intensively with sound designer Willem Sannen. We both love image and sound for their materiality and believe they can explore their own beauty. Like a painter paints, like a drawer draws, we do not feel limited to the visual reality in front of us.
